MA graduate in BA Fine Art and the Graduate Certificate in Book Arts, I am an artist, curator and researcher living and working in Hastings Old Town. My work spans artists' books, installation, handmade objects, painting, drawing, costume and collage, all with a link to archives, obsessive collecting & re-imaging the past.
Works include a petting zoo made from unloved and broken animals, an on-street pencil sharpening station, a 10ft giant, and a hobby horse made from my late father's 1960s woollen coat. I am currently working on a series of hand puppets, critters and curios to form a wearable and pop-up 'Hedgerow Puppet Show', based on research of puppeteer Walter Wilkinson, and a new research project based on Hainault Forest and the Fairlop Oak, in Essex/ East London. My house has been in turn a furniture warehouse, an ice store, various shops, a workspace for filleting fish and an occasional gallery. It is tucked one street back from the seafront, directly behind the rooms where Rossetti stayed before his marriage to Lizzie Siddal in 1860. The former shop space was my studio for many years, but now I'm based in another equally fascinating old building on the same road, with a group of other artists and architects, which we open regularly for open studios and events. My fascination in this long forgotten and run down back street led to a year-long arts, heritage and community project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. I formed the West Street Community Group, who with a team of enthusiasts and volunteers conducted a year of research, held a celebratory street party, compiled an archive and published 2,000 copies of The West Street Chronicle. Working with Home Live Art we ran Illuminating West Street: A Winter Salon a weekend of performances and events (funded by Arts Council England). As a director of Creative Coast I ran the Coastal Currents arts festival from 2009-15, coordinating large-scale artworks, performances and events with international artists including Kate McGwire, Tod Hanson, Frank Boelter, Willi Dorner and the Clod Ensemble. I programmed six intensive months of events at Stade Hall in 2011 and coordinated experimental pop-up projects in empty shops in Hastings town centre during 2010-11. As an artist/ maker I undertake commissions, run workshops, give talks/ presentations and have written for arts and local news publications. Recent commissions have included Strike-a-Light heritage and Moving Mountains, published by Footnote Press in 2023. I love projects that combine my main interests of deep research, and making! I was trustee of the Hastings Storytelling Festival from 2020-2024, and am a current member of the Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green Committee - I ran a special project in 2023 to celebrate the fortieth anniversary and now lead the annual education and outreach programme. In 2024 I designed the artwork that was used on all publicity and merchandise. |
